The Abbott Trifecta Valve is a bovine pericardial device designed to replace damaged aortic valves. Introduced in 2011, these valves were marketed as durable solutions with a 15-20 year lifespan, making them attractive for patients with heart valve disease.
Clinical evidence now shows these valves may have failed at alarming rates, often within just 3-5 years after implantation. This premature failure puts patients at risk for possibly serious complications and requires additional surgical intervention.
Medical research has also raised concerns. A study in JAMA Cardiology found Trifecta valves had a much higher risk of structural deterioration compared to similar products. Research in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery documented high rates of leaflet tears and calcification.
When these valves fail, patients may experience symptoms including shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, and irregular heartbeats. Many require emergency revision surgery, a procedure with mortality rates significantly higher than the initial operation.
Despite mounting evidence of problems, Abbott allegedly delayed warning patients and physicians about these risks until February 2023, potentially endangering thousands. Our Abbott Trifecta Valve lawyers work to hold them accountable after causing harm to Memphis residents.
