What is an Underride Accident?

Understanding the Hazards of Underride Accidents

An “underride” accident happens when a smaller vehicle crashes into the rear of a large truck and slides underneath. Although rare, these types of accidents are particularly dangerous with an increased risk of fatality. According to a study from National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), between 1994 and 2010, there was an average of 1,779 truck crash fatalities each year. Of these crashes, 68 were due to underrides.

The Risk Factors of an Underride Accident

An analysis conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the following factors contributed to fatal underride accidents:

  • Driving at high speeds.
  • Driving on divided roads.
  • Driving in a rural area.
  • Driving on roads with posted speed limits of 55 mph or greater.
  • Driving on straight roads.
  • Driving in the dark.
  • Driving through construction or maintenance zones.

How to Avoid and Underride Accidents

While it may be impossible to avoid some of the risk factors above on your travels, such as driving in rural areas or driving at night, some driving behaviors can help you prevent an underride crash. Remember to:

  • Follow speed limits.
  • Limit distractions (don’t text and drive or talk on your phone while driving).
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Drive defensively.
